Our Feelings: Major Jonathan Pinder

Jonathan Pinder is by far one of the most favorite characters I’ve ever created. I’ve always been one who was drawn to the darker, gritter, slightly (mainly) unhinged type, and I worked HARD on coming up with this man. I can’t say much, because you guys are only getting started with him, but my goodie gosh, I love him. As opposed to my *ahem* quirkier, weirder, Canadian Cop Loving, counterpart.
Jonathan is a very…complicated character. There’s many layers to him and, unfortunately, you’re all just seeing the extremely crazy side. We all know his fixation and his fascination with Quinta. To him, she is the perfect woman and he wants her for himself. There’s also the whole aspect of him being in control of a ton of lives depending on his choices. It rests on his shoulders and he virtually can’t do it. Then there’s how stoic and aloof he is from everyone around him and GAAAAH I HATE THIS. I can’t tell you all why and it SUCKS. There is one thing I can say is, he’s clearly delusional.
From day one Maddie and I have been on the polar opposite spectrum of Jonathan. For me, he’s fun to write. She refuses to touch him, so all of his lines and quirks is from the mind of yours truly. She’s hated him from the moment I put him on the table and her hatred, along with Cat’s, fuels me to make him as abysmal I can. Just to get under their skin. On another hand, when we’re writing scenes about him, I have to tap into this whole different spectrum of thinking. I have to look at the world through his deluded eye and it’s…no pun intended…eye opening. It’s so hard to explain without revealing his complicated past, just know I go to a dark place. Sometimes, I even find myself grinning wickedly like him, taking on his accent, doing exactly what he does in some scenes while writing it. Now I sound crazy, but we already knew that. Oh you, *waves a hand*
All I can reiterate is, Major Jonathan Pinder, you either love him or you hate him. Uh…I expect a lot of hate and that’s what I thrive on. That’s what HE thrives on. So, I can definitely tell you he’s not going anywhere, and I couldn’t be happier about it. Don’t me wrong, I love my other babies to death, but Jonathan? He’s alike to my heart when it comes to this series. Tell me some the characters you’ve read or written that just touched that sweet spot in your no-nos. One that everyone else hates or criticizes, but you just can’t help but feel the love radiating when you read them. It’s unexplainable, but I want to hear it. So, have a wonderful rest of your night, thank you for reading, and remember…every day is just a different variation of a hot mess. I know it is for me.
